within / without

Within/Without is a very important body of work for Walter’s career. Light is Walter’s medium, and his skies and abstract landscapes are a viewing chamber that affects the way we perceive the world around us. As part of his large canvases, we almost can find a path to his soft red ochre walls.

Within each piece, light seems more painterly. Movement and emotions are intensified, and the sky shimmers and pulsates within profound colors. Within/Without is at its most dramatic and intense series, marking the transition between the past and future of Walter’s creations.

“Walter reveals the immensity of the natural world and the beauty of the ethereal world.”

-Marisa Caichiolo, Art Curator

The artistic gesture becomes a powerful existential expression: “I paint therefore I am.” To paint is therefore an inescapable event, of vital value relating itself to existentialist philosophy. In American abstract expressionism, the gestural action and the dynamic mark prevail as in Kline, Motherwell, and Pollock. The canvas manifests itself as the liberation of oppressed energies while substantially confining itself to the redeeming value of positive and constructive art. Painting becomes an inborn action to existing. It must also be remembered that the greatest innovation of this time from the point of view of technique is represented by the introduction of acrylic paint and color.
